Why The Gay Goods Will Not Be Covering Helix Studios’ Content

by Mark Peikert

This may come as a shock, but we here at The Gay Goods don’t write about porn just because we love it.

Don’t get me wrong—we love it a great deal. Some might say too much but those are the kinds of people we don’t want in our lives anyway. But in addition to our genuine enjoyment in watching adult men do sexy, filthy things to one another, we make money.

Sex and money, our twin passions. Isn’t that so American?

The Gay Goods is just one of the many, many editorial sites that have affiliate partnerships with the studios making the porn we all love. That means when we link out to the new releases, those links include a special code that lets the studio know if you subscribed because of us. If you do, we get a finder’s fee.
This is a pretty common practice across all publications; what is The New York Times’ Wirecutter blog except a massive, high-end affiliate site? And if you’ve ever clicked on a link in an article directing you to something on Amazon, chances are they made money on it.

So it’s in our best interest to write about the porn you actually want to buy, because it increases the odds that we’ll make money. Presumably, one of those studios is Helix Studios. But we’re not going to be writing about Helix.

To be clear: We have never written about any of Helix Studios releases. Controversies and accusations, yes. But their actual content has never been posted here.

In the last two months, enough credible accusations have been lobbed against owner Keith Miller and his behind-the-scenes employees that we do not feel comfortable helping add to their bottom line until those accusations are taken seriously.

We’re aware that there are many, many studios with problematic pasts. And we will investigate each new accusation regarding those studios and decide on a case by case basis whether we post about their content. But for now, we want to be very clear: We will not be supporting Helix Studios.

We hope that you’ll join us in steering clear of their product until Miller and his cohorts have addressed the accusations made against them in a thoughtful and considered manner. And we hope that other affiliate sites will join us in taking these accusations seriously.

If you have a personal experience working there that you’d like to share with us, on or off the record, please reach out to [email protected].

Apart from all the other things that have come out in recent weeks, there also appears to be a connection between Helix and alleged rapist Bryan Singer that I wish someone would take a closer look at. Apparently Keith Miller and Bryan Singer are friends, and a lot of Helix models have met Singer/attended his parties over the years. I’m aware that Bryan Singer has never been convicted of rape. But he has had very serious allegations levelled against him by different men, and in the light of recent revelations about Helix, the thought of teenaged performers being introduced to him/encouraged to attend his parties by the studio’s owner is certainly unsettling.

I applaud you in not including Helix Studios to enable them to make money while alledgely engaging in all sorts of bad behavior towards their models. I have been a previous Helix subscriber for a limited time but will not subscribe to any of their material until this matter is resolved. I do believe in what the models have said and it seems a pattern has developed over the last several years. I love porn just as much as the next guy but I do believe in decency when a company mistreats their models and I think they deserve the support of the public. I hope other outlets that help promote gay porn will follow suit and not give Helix any promotion until this matter is solved.

That seems very right and your emphasis on not just the accusations but the fact they are trying to power through a “bad patch” without addressing any of it – and deflecting with whataboutism and the transparent attempt to distract with unrelated “sympathetic” stories – is what is absolutely galling and indicative of the rot over there.
A group, a person, a business that is falsely accused would want to defend itself to the hilt or, if things had gone wrong without them intending to, they would want to look at it in good faith and be contrite about their own mistakes.
Instead dismissiveness, silence and going on about your business as usual speaks volumes
