GALECA, a 300-member strong critics group of international, LGBTQ+-identifying journalists*, has announced its television nominations weeks ahead of the 2021 Emmy Awards doing the same.
Of the 20 acting nominees, five publicly identify as LGBTQ+. Three of those noms went to Pose performers for that series’ final season, and two to actors on limited series It’s a Sin, with the final nod going to Bowen Yang, the only performer who might be eligible again next year for Saturday Night Live. And though the acting nominations are in gender-neutral categories, shows about the LGBTQ+ experience are segregated into their own category, though they are also eligible in the series and miniseries categories.
Additionally, nominees for the Wilde Wit of the Year Award, celebrating a “performer, writer or commentator whose observations both challenge and amuse,” include Kathryn Hahn, Fran Lebowitz, and Randy Rainbow.
For a full list of nominees, which is heavy on WandaVision and Mare of Easttown, read on below! The winners will be announced Sunday, August 29.
