The National Gay Flag Football League is a nonprofit flag football league for gay men. You would think that flag football, being a non-contact version of American football, would be relatively uncontroversial even among the straights. Surely, a small sports non-profit simply getting a sponsor won’t threaten their (supposed) masculinity, right?
Well, no. For some reason, the 2002-founded league is suddenly “controversial” in the year 2024, and all because the Buffalo Bills have given the 20-year organization a sponsorship. Because of this, every mainstream straight media company is rushing to report on the “shock” and “outrage” behind it—and they’re deliberately lying about what the sponsorship, and the NGFFL even are.
There Is No Fact Checking For Gay Sports Coverage
Yahoo Sports, in particular, turned in absolutely bottom-of-the-barrel reporting on the subject, largely citing the outrage-farm of Twitter as its source and framing the situation as if the Buffalo Bills founded their own gay league in its headline. It’s the sort of schlok reporting you expect from Newsmax (who, of course, had a full on meltdown over it) and you really have to wonder what has gone wrong in the state of fair coverage when Fox News‘s website might have the most honest reporting on the league.

It shouldn’t be surprising, since Americans are so eager to erase the contributions and history of queer figures from its record books. Queer people are encouraged to shut up and be invisible in their leagues… and yet, when they form their own, they are screamed down at by every major media for the pointlessness of their organization existing. I keep hoping someday that straight Media will make the connection between causation and correlation, but it would appear, at least for the NGFFL, that today is not that day.
At least CBS Sports gave some positive coverage on the 2023 finals.
Austin, Texas will host the next finals, the Gay Bowl XXIV, from October 31st to November 3rd.
