One of the many trailblazing, groundbreaking gay artists who lost his life in the AIDS epidemic, David Wojnarowicz was—as fiercely, unapologetically political and queer. As you might guess from the title of a new documentary about his life and work: Wojnarowicz: F**k You F*ggot F**cker.
Available in Virtual Cinemas through Kino Marquee starting March 19, director Chris McKim tells Wojnarowicz’s story through exclusive audio and visual journals and tapes with friends, including Peter Hujar, Fran Lebowitz and Gracie Mansion. At a time when the 1980s queer scene gets compressed into a handful of touchstones—Larry Kramer, ACT UP!—this is an important cultural document preserving gay history on the verge of being forgotten. And for those looking to learn more about Wojnarowicz in the meantime, check out his essay collection Close to the Knives: A Memoir of Disintegration.
The documentary is produced by WOW Docs /World of Wonder’s Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey.
