Exclusive: Why Beloved Furry Porn Site Growl Boys Has Felt MIA Lately

by Mark Durane

For Growl Boys fans, there is nothing else like it in adult entertainment.

The story-driven transformational porn—which boasts a complicated mythology and supernatural creatures that rival any season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or True Blood—has a devoted fan base who thrill to the seriousness of the content. Many fetish or kink sites seem like they’re judging the viewer for enjoying the content; Growl Boys, from Legrand and Jay Wolf and their company Carnal Media, rings true because they’re also turned on by the content.

Which is one reason why so many fans have been vocal in their disappointment that there haven’t been as many Growl Boys releases lately. As usual, part of the answer boils down to the usual culprit: COVID-19.

“During the pandemic, we went down to one release a month. Last year no one knew how long the pandemic would last. What if we weren’t able to make content for a year, or two? We made this switch in part to make sure we wouldn’t hit a point where we’d run out of content,” Wolf tells The Gay Goods. “We have shot and illustrated enough content for a year, but what if the pandemic went on for two years?”

And though the video content slowed down, Wolf points to the rich multimedia world of Growl Boys that takes more time and creativity to create than most new porn releases. Chief among them, the original art work.

“We hire artists who work for Marvel. We hire artists who work for DC Comics,” Wolf says. “We hire famous gay artists like Joe Phillips. And the art that they do costs as much money as the film production!”

Our illustrations require so much labor from the artists. Like a second production for each update. And that is on top of what we are already doing with story creation, sexual performances, latex prosthetics and dramatic sets in the videos that mark each new Growl Boys video. “It all has to be thought out and drawn out and then pencilled and then colored—it’s a lot of work, and that art is in itself an update, appreciated on its own for many fans,” Wolf says.

One things that is remarkable about Growlboys that many reviewers have noted are the lengthy written components to each episode. Chapters for stories on the website often clock in at 25 single-spaced pages. The resulting combination of video, narrative, and artwork is what marks Growl Boys as something separate from most adult content today, and the video component of the stories has made producing it safely and efficiently during a pandemic a concern.

As Wolf says, “Growlboys is truly something special. We’re giving people, rich storytelling, and it’s incredibly erotic.” And as always, special takes longer.
